Exports by the Cambodian apparel manufacturing industry have gone up by 11 per cent in the first quarter of 2015, according to a recent statement released by the country’s Ministry of Commerce. The statement details that the country exported apparel products worth US $ 1.73 billion during the January-March period this year as opposed to US $ 1.56 billion over the same period last year. Apparel manufacturing sector is Cambodia’s largest foreign currency earner. Accounting for 80 per cent of the country’s total exports, Cambodia has mainly been exporting sold to the European Union, the United States, and some Asian countries, particularly China, South Korea, and Japan. Kaing Monika, Deputy Secretary General of the Garment Manufacturers Association in Cambodia (GMAC) has predicted that the sector would see higher growth for the rest of the year thanks to production increase as strikes over wages ended.
