Sweden-based apparel retailer H&M will soon introduce a ‘fair wage method’ in around 20 garment factories (that make apparel for it) of Bangladesh to help improve productivity, factory conditions and combat unrest at the plants. As part of its programme for three of its supplier nations in Asia – China, Cambodia and Bangladesh, from which a total of 68 factories have been selected, the system would be introduced in the current year only. This move by the Europe’s second-largest clothing retailer which has 3,649 stores across 59 markets, is a well thought-out plan to ensure higher prices for apparel items that H&M buys from the factories while ensuring to boost workers’ wages and also providing them with some discretionary income.
