
India’s Union Agriculture Ministry has reportedly put forward a proposal to increase the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of cotton by Rs. 160 per quintal to Rs. 4,320 for the 2017-18 per quintal this year from Rs. 3,860. The new crop year will begin from July. This news has come when farmers prepare fields for kharif sowing.
According to reports, the Ministry has moved a Cabinet note for inter-ministerial comments on fixing MSP at Rs. 4,020 per quintal for medium staple cotton and Rs. 4,320 per quintal for long staple cotton for the upcoming crop year. MSP for the ongoing 2016-17 crop year was fixed t Rs. 3,860 per quintal and long staple cotton at Rs. 4,160.

The Government is also planning to promote first generation Bt cotton variety developed by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). National Seed Corporation has been advised to ensure sufficient supply in the ensuing kharif season.
