Improving Working Conditions and Productivity in the Garment Industry
The International Labour Organisation, Geneva, has, over the years, issued for adoption a widely respected code of International Labour Conventions and Recommendations on employment, conditions of work, social security, among others. These have been painstakingly researched, compiled and edited by
Juan Carlos Hiba
& after being adapted by Dr. Rajesh Bheda for the Indian subcontinent, presented in the form of an Action Manual, titled 'Improving Working Conditions and Productivity in the Garment Industry’. Great effort has been made to bring to the Indian (and foreign) manufacturer the practicalities of what it is that the ILO desires..
Pucker Free Seams
Pucker or Puckering is the most used (abused?) term in the garment manufacturing industry. Pick up any quality controllers report, and the first thing that will strike your eye will be “…Puckering in armhole, …Puckering in neckline binding, …control Puckering in bottom hem…” the list is endless. Buying office quality controllers are as enamoured of this term as much as manufacturers abhor it. What is it that makes it so distasteful? Why does it occur? How can it be controlled? These questions and more are answered by the StitchWorld Technical Bulletin co-authored By Prabir Jana and Y. P. Garg. While there are numerous leaflets, documents and articles available on pucker, we have found that the majority of them lay great stress on “inherent pucker” (only material parameters). In this booklet have tried to include process parameters as well as sewing of lightweight fabrics.

Quality Assurance for the Retailers
Assured quality levels go a long way in a subjective assessment of coast, an important factor in evaluating productivity. The flip side is the assurance level of retailers, the most important link in the circle of business. Since they sell a variety of products, they need to be sure that their suppliers provide them the requisite quality. Thus, there is a requirement for retailers to verifying that products ordered meets specified quality levels. This book written by
Dr. Pradip V. Mehta
, an expert on quality in the garment industry will outline various approaches available to retailers to assure product quality while also providing a reference guide to manufactures.
