28 Indian jute mills shut in FY 2016

At least 28 private and public sector jute mills located in various parts of the country have closed in the financial year 2015-16. Indian Government launches drive to open bank accounts for textile workers

The Indian Government has launched a drive to open bank accounts for textile workers in the country. As on January 20, 2017, a total of 11,86,203 bank accounts have been opened and activated for textile workers, which includes 17,245 jute workers. India’s handloom helpline ‘Bunkar Mitra’ now functional

Indian Textiles Ministry has announced that ‘Bunkar Mitra’, its maiden helpline for handloom weavers, is now functional. The helpline was launched by the Union Textiles Minister, Smriti Zubin Irani on December 25, 2016 on the occasion of “Good Governance Day”. Demonetisation Effect: Over 5 lakh garment workers, weavers open bank accounts

Government of India has reportedly said that more than 5 lakh textile workers, weavers and artisans have opened bank accounts to reduce impact of demonetisation in the past two weeks. These include regular workers, migrant labourers and those working on contract basis. Most of the accounts have been opened in textile and garmenting hubs like Surat, Tirupur and Bhiwandi.
