There is talk that if the FTA with Europe is not coming through, India should negotiate with UK for a similar agreement as most exporters in India are working majorly with UK buyers in the region. Do you agree with this view…? Should India override EU to forge an alliance with the UK…? Do you think such an arrangement could affect our relations with EU?
Any FTA in today environment is welcome. We need to attract buyers to our country and FTA is a great incentive to make people buy from India. If FTA with Europe is not possible then FTA with UK is a good welcome move.
Post Brexit FTA with United Kingdom looks bright. Many factors were blocking the FTA with EU, intellectual property rights was the major blockage which was holding EU from signing the FTA with India. There were some disagreement from Indian side too.
With Britain the major issue which is holding up FTA, is the Visa procedures laid by Britain. Even though Scotland which is pushing Britain to sign the FTA with India, as India is seen as potential market for Scotch whiskey FTA / PTA will be a major boost for Indian apparel industries.
I don’t see any reason that the relationship with EU might be affected by signing the PTA with Britain.
